Malabar Farm Investigation

Investigation #05CMR70074

The Ohio Exploration Society assisted our partners at the Central Ohio Paranormal Society (COPS) with their investigation at Malabar Farm State Park in Richland County on September 10, 2005.

General Information

Located in Lucas, southeast of Mansfield, the Malabar Farm has a rich history. Click Here to read more about the farm on our page dedicated to its history. Park employees who work in the farm’s main home late at night have reported lights turning on by themselves, the piano playing on its own, and a general feeling of uneasiness. Our partners at COPS was contacted to complete an investigation at the farm and invited the OES to join them. This page is dedicated to our first investigation at Malabar Farm. You may click the link at the bottom of the page to see results from our second investigation there. A reporter with ThisWeek Newspaper wrote an article that featured this investigation.

Paranormal / Unusual Activity

During the initial tour of the main home, Robinson felt a cat rub against his left leg while standing in a back hallway as he spoke to another gentleman. When Robinson looked down expecting to see a cat, nothing was there. A few minutes later, Niklas and the same gentleman Robinson had been speaking to heard the meow of a cat in the same hallway. Again, there were no cats present in the home. Robinson asked one of the park’s employees if the Bromfield’s had owned a cat and the employee confirmed that they had owned several cats.

Copeland and G. Robare smelled a medicinal odor in various rooms of the house, including in the living room and George Hawkins’ bedroom. Later in the investigation, Copeland picked up strong feelings in both Mrs. Bromfield’s bedroom and their daughter Anne’s bedroom.

M. Robare and Garrison went outside to retrieve some equipment from their SUV parked near the main home when the SUV was suddenly pushed back into their knees, as if someone had pushed the vehicle from the front. The two were the only people outside at that time and could find no reasonable explanation for the movement.

Inside the main house, closet doors that had been closed were found open minutes later and at least one closet light turned on by itself. Several investigators felt an extreme cold spot in the middle of Anne’s bedroom at one point during our investigation, but there was not a thermometer set up to record the actual temperature difference. In the back hallway where the earlier “cat” experiences had occurred, at least two investigators heard someone coming up the stairs. Upon investigating the sound, no one else was around.

A total of fifteen instances of electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) were recorded during the first Malabar Farm investigation. G. Robare captured a possible apparition of a man standing in the doorway of Anne’s bedroom in an infrared NightShot photo she took during the investigation. The tall figure appeared to be wearing pants and boots. The only two people who were present and as tall as the figure in the photo were wearing shorts and sneakers.

Evidence – EVP Recordings

Anne: This recording from Bromfield’s study clearly says, “Anne.” Anne was the name of Bromfield’s oldest daughter.
Beds: A faint whisper was recorded in the Bogart Room saying, “Beds.” There were two beds in the room.
Come See How They Fall: Recorded in Anne’s bedroom, this voice either says, “Come see how they fall,” or “Let’s see how they run.”
Scoot: Recorded in Anne’s room, we were not sure if this was an EVP or a chair scooting. You be the judge.
Meow: Recorded near Anne’s bedroom, this sounds like a long, drawn-out meow of a cat.
Unknown Voices: This was recorded in a closed-off room with no investigators present. We are not sure what the voice says.
Woof: Not only did we capture the meow of a cat, we also recorded the sound of a barking dog. Perhaps it was one of Bromfield’s prized boxers.
Honk: This recording sounds very much like an old tin toy horn. It was captured in the upstairs playroom.
I Don’t Know (x2): Recorded in George Hawkins’ bedroom, this voice says, “I don’t know,” twice.
I’m Dead: This whispery voice stating, “I’m dead,” was recorded in the playroom.
Laughing or Voice: We are not sure if this is an EVP. While some hear laughing, others hear “Help,” or “Stop.”
Be Good: This voice was so faint that the audio had to be boosted. It sounds like a woman saying, “Be good.”
Hey: A long, drawn-out, “Hey,” was recorded in the background as everyone was talking to one another.
No!: This voice saying, “No,” was recorded just after a knock on the basement door was heard.
You’re Welcome: Mrs. Bromfield was thanked for providing any results during an investigation in her bedroom and this voice replied, “You’re welcome.”
