 Camden

Devil’s Backbone – This gorge along Paint Creek is said to be haunted by Indians who died there. The Miami Indian Chief Red Turtle placed a curse on the valley when he was being driven out by white settlers. Throughout the 1800s, settlers blamed the curse and ghostly Indians for many deaths there.

Fort Saint Clair – The ghost of a soldier known as “Gory Head & Bloody Bones” is said to haunt the historic fort. An Indian can also be seen dancing around a fire in the ravine below the cemetery. Related: OES Visit

Bell Cemetery – Down a small driveway just after Washington Township Road is a cemetery that is reportedly haunted. Large white objects moving around, strange noises and the feeling of being watched are common here. Related: Contribution

Brubaker Bridge – Built in 1887 to cross Sam’s Run Creek, this historic bridge is said to be haunted. In the 1930s, a group of teenagers were returning from a party when they crashed inside the covered bridge. Their bodies were thrown everywhere, which caused the death toll to remain a mystery for some time because no one knew exactly how many people were in the vehicle. One boy was thought to have gone missing when he had actually been in the accident. Authorities had not searched for his body at the scene of the crash and it remained hidden in the brush for years before being washed away. Ever since the accident, people have experienced odd things while driving inside the bridge. Car engines have died and witnesses have heard a tapping sound on their car window…presumably the lost boy trying his best to be found. Related: Contribution

Fudge Road – Two men who died during a drug bust are said to haunt the road. There are reports of a “little person” house where everything is undersized. A white human-like beast can sometimes be seen in the area. The bridge, known to locals as Crybaby Bridge, is haunted by a few ghosts. The ghost of a baby who was thrown off the side by its mother in the 1800s haunts the bridge along with a woman who hanged herself there after her infant had died. A truck driver who drove his rig off the side of the bridge is also supposed to haunt it. It is said that if you park there, shut off your car, roll down the window and say “mama” three times, you can hear a baby cry. There are several no trespassing signs along the road and neighbors have called law enforcement and fired warning shots in the past.

 West Alexandria

Buckeye Jake’s Eatery & Bar – This old house on US Route 35 at the center of West Alexandria has been renovated and turned into a popular and upbeat restaurant and bar. However, the atmosphere changes after hours. Managers have reported seeing lights turned on, doors open, and shapes pass in front of windows many times after locking the place up. Employees have reported strange things happening even during business hours. Items have fallen or even flown from shelves, the sound system makes a crackling sound and changes stations on its own, tables have toppled over with no one near them, and chairs have skidded across the floor by themselves. Some servers have reported goosebumps and shivers, whispers and strange sounds, and have occasionally seen the figure of a woman wearing a white gown, which they have affectionately nicknamed Helen. Most of the activity seems to be centered around the front room on the top floor and the original front staircase. Several employees have been so terrified by the activity that they have run from work terrified and never returned.

Lanier School – Standing along State Route 503 just south of West Alexandria, this school and surrounding homes often play host to paranormal activity. Police are often called to the area to investigate reports of strange lights and mysterious sounds, but nothing is ever found.
