The OES visited the Pancake Schoolhouse on
October 18, 2002. Also known as the Selsor Moon Schoolhouse, the building was
just off of Selsor-Moon Road in Madison County. Much like the Paint
Creek Schoolhouse, located just down the road, the Pancake School
was probably built in the mid to late 1800s, possibly even the early 1900s. The
Pancake School was a one room schoolhouse and was in decent shape compared to
the Paint Creek Schoolhouse. On our visit the building was being used to store
some farm equipment and other junk. But the Pancake Schoolhouse is said to have
a dark past. Local legend states that the school is haunted by the ghosts of
children who were killed during an Indian raid. We do not know whether this is
true or not. Some witnesses have reported seeing
strange lights around the area of the schoolhouse and others have heard voices
speaking to them. Pancake Cemetery, located
just behind the school, is said to be haunted as well. The legend says that the
children killed during the raid are buried in unmarked graves there. We did hear
strange noises coming from the field next to the school during a night trip, but
it turned out to be cows.
