The OES visited Stewart Cemetery on March 23, 2008. Stewart Cemetery was chiefly used throughout the 1800s, however, a few burials had occurred in the early twentieth century as well. The cemetery was in fairly good condition, but it definitely had its share of broken and illegible tombstones. A 1937 newspaper article stated that a fifteen-foot bronze marker belonging to the McCurdy family was stolen from its stone base in one of several cemetery vandalisms striking the county that week. It is a shame that even seventy years ago, people were disrespectful enough to steal from one’s final resting place.
