The OES visited the Sunset Crematory on March 17, 2002. The crematory was located in the back of Sunset Cemetery near Galloway, Ohio, just past Alton. We decided to drop by this cemetery one day while driving around the area. Most of the graves here were fairly new, the cemetery itself was founded in 1922. Not expecting much to turn up, we casually drove among the graves until we reached the back of the cemetery. That was when we noticed the large crematory. We speculate that the crematory was built sometime near the founding of the cemetery. It was made of limestone and had nice stained-glass windows. As far as we could tell, the crematory was still used as it was locked up pretty tight. We were able to get into the basement area, but nothing much was down there except for wasps and trash. We looked around for some stairs that would lead up to the main part of the crematory, but didn't find anything. If you have any more information or pictures of the Sunset Crematory, please email with details.
