The OES visited the Scioto Trail Pool on
February 9, 2002. Located on South High Street in Columbus, this pool had been
in operation since 1960 before it closed for good in the late 1990s. Many people
were sad to see the pool close, as it was the only public (membership) pool on
the far south end of the city. When we visited it was pretty clear that the pool
hadn't been used for a long time. There were weeds and grass growing through the
cracks of the pool floor, the diving boards were gone, and the bottom of the
pool was very dirty in places. We tried to enter the pool house or get into the
grounds of the pool, but it was locked up tight. There was a boat under the roof
of one of the shelter-house like buildings, so we thought the owner used it for
storage. Not too far behind the grounds of the pool were a couple of houses that
looked lived-in. A month after we visited the Scioto Trail Pool, Southland Self
Storage purchased the property and tore down the pool and the used car lot next
door. A sprawling self-storage facility was built over the pool's former
grounds. Now the only thing remaining of the Scioto Trail Pool are the memories
of those who spent their summers keeping cool in the pool for more than 25
years.
