| The OES visited the Route 23 Delaware House
on June 29, 2003. Obviously, the home was located off Route 23 in
Delaware County. From the looks of the house, it may have been built
in the late 1800s to early 1900s. It's last use seemed to be as a
business of some sort, as there are papers and files scattered about
the whole house and industrial office furniture in the rooms. By looking at these various
documents, the business probably moved out in the early to mid 1990s. The house
and it's surrounding acreage was set to be rezoned at the time of our visit.
This probably means only one thing for this old house, demolition.
UPDATE: Indeed, the rezoning notice
meant demolition for this old home. When driving past the area in
2006, the home was no longer there. |

Exterior & Ground Floor |
The front of the home with the rezoning sign posted on the porch. The "newer" garage is just behind the house. This is what once was a living room turned into office space. Some of the remaining files and desks. The parlor floor was scattered with debris and papers. The kitchen was at the rear of the house. No food here, the cabinets were bare. The hallway leading from the kitchen to the bathroom and basement stairs. This was the only bathroom of the house, just across from the basement door. Some kind of computer equipment remained in this closet. This large hole in the ceiling was in the parlor, leading up to a bedroom. The narrow and steep stairway to the second floor.

Second Floor & Basement |
This is the center bedroom at the front of the house. There were odd messages on the walls here. This small closet is where some files were stored. This is the bedroom that sits above the parlor. You can see the large hole in the floor leading down to the first floor. There was some kind of netting in this bedroom above the living room. In the same bedroom is this hole in the wall with some kind of red substance pouring from it. Look closely at this picture and you'll see a little bird. Some of the drywall has broken away to reveal the original brick wall. Looking down the basement stairs, you can see the mess that was left behind. One of the support beams in the basement. The original stone foundation of the house. The floor was made of dirt. This is the heating unit installed some time ago, but not when the house was originally built. A table sat in one corner of the basement It was a pretty large table of some sort. Maybe it was used to hold index cards at one time.
