The OES visited Oak Grove Cemetery on May 5,
2001. Upon arriving, we noticed that the tombstones near the entrance were
newer, some up to the current date even. We drove around to the other side of a
hill and the older tombstones appeared. There were a few hundred tombstones in
the cemetery and most were in great condition. There were only a handful, mostly
from the 1800s, that were faded beyond recognition. The oldest date of death
found on a tombstone was 1811, so the cemetery was probably founded around that
time frame. There were many Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery as well.
Overall Oak Grove Cemetery was an interesting place to visit. To get there, turn
onto Bausch Road from Norton. Bausch Road will turn into Alkire Road. Just
follow this road until you see the cemetery on the right. Total distance is
about 5 miles west from Norton Road.
