| The OES visited the Kirkwood Cemetery on
October 18, 2002. Kirkwood Cemetery is located just off of State
Route 42, just west of London in Madison County. This is a rather
large cemetery for the area and is still in use today. Many of the
older tombstones that we found there are from the mid-1800s, so that
may have been around the time the cemetery was founded. The cemetery
also features a mausoleum that is built into the side of a hill. The
date above the mausoleum's doors states that it was built in 1881.
There was no entry point to gain access to the mausoleum. There were
many statues and large monuments in this cemetery. Undoubtedly,
there are a few Civil War Soldiers buried here along with soldiers
from many wars after. The photos on this page is just a small
collection from the cemetery. |
