Below are historical photos of the now
demolished Junction City Prison in Perry County. The prison was a satellite
prison of the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus that was used to house good behavior
prisoners and for the care of aged and disabled prisoners. Prisoners here paid
their debt to society by making bricks to be used for State projects. An escape
attempt was made in 1927 resulting in the death of a prison guard. In the 1970s,
a hostage situation occurred when prisoners took three female hostages by
knifepoint and one inmate was killed. The structure was expanded several times
during its tenure as a prison, finally closing in the late 1970s. Just after the
prison was abandoned, the motion picture "Brubaker" was filmed there starring
Robert Redford. In the early 1990s, a pizza factory was run from the former
prison, making kits for schools. For more information on the Junction City
Prison and to see photos from the OES exploration there,

"Brubaker" Prison Flyby: This video is from Twentieth Century Fox's 1980 movie "Brubaker." It's a flyby of the prison as it appeared decades ago. The designs around the roof were props used during the movie that were removed once the movie was filmed. |
