What exactly is Electronic Voice Phenomenon, or EVP for short, you ask? No one knows exactly what causes EVP, but a common theory is that EVPs are voices from beyond the grave that can be recorded on modern equipment such as microcassette recorders, digital voice recorders, and camcorders. Potential for capturing a ghostly voice on tape exist just about anywhere with an extensive history. Anyone can try to record for EVPs and will eventually get results. Listed below is a guideline to help you record your very own EVPs during your adventures.
 

 OBTAINING THE EQUIPMENT
  • Purchase the audio recorder of your choice (microcassette, audio cassette, or digital) along with a microphone that is external to the unit, especially if you've opted for an analog tape recorder. This will prevent sounds recorded from the mechanical wheels within the recorder that could cause ambient noise during playback. You may purchase a recorder through our Gear Shop.
  • The price for this equipment is not too drastic, just use your keen saving senses. But do remember, the price usually reflects the quality of the recording. Analog and digital recorders start around $25.
  • Also, be aware that you will need to acquire some 90 minute blank tapes if you're using an analog recorder. it is EXTREMELY important that they are blank and have never been previously recorded on. This will prevent any bleed-through from previous recordings.
 USING THE RECORDING DEVICE
  • Use the recorder in areas that you believe there is paranormal activity; such as cemeteries, abandoned structures, known haunted locations or at home, if applicable.
  • Always check the recorder to make sure it is recording. Look at the wheels that turn the tape and be certain that they are turning before you begin your questioning. On digital units, make sure the record symbol has appeared on the LCD screen and the record lamp is lit red.
  • Be sure to speak clearly while presenting your questions concerning the spirit. Sometimes you'll get a definite answer to what you have asked and other times it may be vague. AVOID WHISPERING!
  • If your recording device permits, try using headphones while you're recording so that you can hear EVP in real-time. Our members have had several successful sessions while using headphones.
  • After the questioning and investigating, simply play back and listen to what you may have encountered during your adventure. It is very useful to listen with headphones for this process. If you come up with voices or sounds that were recorded but not heard while you were at the location, you are successful! Give yourself a pat on the back, you connected to another realm.
 EXTRA EQUIPMENT THAT MAY HELP YOUR CHANCES
  • The Electro-Magnetic Field (EMF) Detector can give you possible poise to track a spirit in it's track (like a deer). This detector shows the strength of electro-magnetic waves that are often present during paranormal activity. You may have to tune out the waves that are connected to living beings, televisions, microwave ovens, or any other electrical appliances. Check out the EMF Detectors in our Gear Section.
  • Flashlights are a good tool to have in dark situations. Without the use of a light, you may not be able to use any form of equipment that has a visual aspect to it, such as an EMF Detector.
  • A thermocouple thermometer is handy in determining cold spots within an area. This is a good tracing unit that could compare to the EMF Detector. Although certain elements of the season can rule out characteristics. Please use your instincts and common sense.
  • The last thing you should carry with you is an open mind. This is what gets you though to the other side during the investigation process. Be ready to expect the unexpected.
